The Academia Sánchez-Casal is committed to High Performance in all areas, for all students regardless of their stage and standard of development. That is why, in 2007, we created the Student Athlete Development department.
The Student Athlete Development department is tasked with the challenge of creating a High Performance centre for research and development. This includes the application of sports science, with state-of-the-art practices in technique, tactics, fitness and mental skills. Also including periodization and planning, medical care and nutrition, equipment services, utilizing specialist coaches and all other student and parent support areas.
Our Student Athlete Development department is also committed to providing our coaching team with the most up-to-date information and coaching tools, that will assist High Performance coaches in developing High Performance student athletes.

In July 2007 the Academia Sanchez-Casal opened the 'TenisLab'. Designed as a 'hub' for the Student Athlete Development department, the hi-tech building contains a classroom/boardroom that can accommodate up to 26 students. With flexible layout and seating arrangements the 'Lab' boasts a 42-inch widescreen plasma TV connected to PC, DVD, and an interactive 'smart-board' as well as a standard white board, air-conditioning and heating plus 4 computer terminals for participant use.
The TenisLab is used to host interactive learner centered classes on all aspects of the game, plus meetings and workshops, Mental Skills Training and more.
At the Academia Sánchez-Casal we understand the importance of long-term student development. Current research shows that it can take an average of 10 years to excel at something. That is why we designed our Student Development Pathway, which shows our student athletes their path to excelling at tennis with education.
Each stage in our pathway links our student's age (chronological age is a guideline, we assess every students developmental age) and their strengths and weaknesses, with a personalized development target that will be used by the student's personal tutor to create the students training program. In addition, specialist coaches work with student athletes at various stages as they progress along the pathway.
The Academia Sánchez-Casal caters for all its student athletes regardless of their stage and standard of development.
At the Academia Sánchez-Casal we implement a tried and tested method of training that has helped student athletes obtain College scholarships and professional players like Svetlana Kuznetsova and Andy Murray reach the top of the elite game.
Based on the methods of legendary coach William 'Pato' Alvarez, students will look to maximize their strengths whist developing an all-court game. Our coaches utilize the teaching of the whole-part-whole method, with an emphasis on the qualities of repetition and intensity that have helped make Spain one of the world's leading tennis nations.
All of the training at Academia Sánchez-Casal is fully periodized and integrated. This means that our tennis, physical and mental training work in harmony to provide maximum benefit for our student athletes, by reducing injury, avoiding 'over-training' and maximizing improvements.
Our year is divided into phases of preparation, competition and transition. We ensure that our student athletes achieve a correct balance of training and competing for their age and standard, leading to High Performance results and peaking at the opportune time.
The Academy's periodization and planning is lead by our player development experts and applies the latest research and trends within the field.
Two of our clay courts currently have fixed cameras in place that are streamed through to the TenisLab for instant recording. Footage is then stored digitally and can be accessed by coaches and students in the TenisLab classroom. We have plans to continually expand the number and capabilities of our fixed cameras, we also have the resources to provide high quality recording from any court or indeed area.
Student athletes receive 'Standard Video Analysis' as part of our long and mid-term journeys. This includes footage of drills for technical analysis and footage of match play for tactical analysis. The student will then receive the analysis from their personal tutor under the guidance and supervision of the TenisLab team. Student athletes on Long Term Journeys receive a DVD of their footage at the end of each academy year.
Our TenisLab expert analysts also offer specific and supplementary analysis packages suited to your individual needs.
